Old Alleynians notched up their fourth league win of the season on Saturday overcoming a stubborn Old Wimbledonians side. Having won the toss Old Alleynians played against the wind in the first half and a strong opening thirty minutes laid the foundation for the win.
With the scrum on top early Hartley opened the scoring after ten minutes when he broke through a tackle in the midfield to score under the posts. Two further first half penalties for infringements inside the 22 helped extend the lead before Old Wimbledonians scored a well worked try on the left touchline. Obaro soon took the interval lead out to 20-5 when he intercepted a stray pass in his 22 and coasted the length to score.
The second half was a more frantic affair as Old Wimbledonians looked to move the ball around while Old Alleynians had two players sin binned for offences inside their 22. Van der Westhuizen, with his third try in four matches, extended the lead soon after when he was first to react to an overthrown line out and stormed over from 10m out.
As the second half became increasingly fractious Old Wimbledonians responded with their second try of the afternoon before Docherty sealed the win, benefitting from the new ELVs by touching down in the left corner.
This was a comfortable win built on a strong opening half but bigger challenges lie ahead in the coming weeks. This weekend the 1st XV take a break before entertaining Old Mid Whitgiftians at home on the 29th November.
