We looked in big trouble as at Saturday lunchtime we had only 9 players and it looked like some heavy arm twisting would be needed if we were to avoid playing two short. Fortunately the club Captain and Charlie Dunley came up trumps offering to fill the breach and give us one of the strongest A XI line ups for some time.
Things looked even better as Faruqui and McKee set about some very ordinary Eltham bowling with the score racing along at six an over. When McKee finally fell, to the left armer who came on first change at the bottom end, caught at deep mid off the scoring rate even increased as Jon Wall treated us to an excellent exhibition of straight six hitting off the same bowler. Faruqui notched his first fifty of the season before being bowled by a clever slower ball from the Eltham skipper. Wall fell to a top edge of the medium pacer who had by now replaced the left-armer. Suddenly things were not quite so easy the Eltham bowling was much improved but the damage had been done. Dunley and Baker with assistance from Franklin and Amin took us past the 200 mark after just 37 overs. Skipper Eyles declared on the dot of four o'clock.
We took to the field immediately it being a little early for tea. Hulf bowling very sharply down the hill conceded only two wides in four overs and caught McKee's eye as a future prospect for his first eleven youth project. Amin back from America looked a little rusty but struck a la Ian Botham with one of his worst balls McKee taking a nice catch at slip. Then came what proved to be the turning point of the game as Eltham's other opener was called back after having been given out LBW by skipper Eyles there had apparently been an edge before the pad was struck.
There was no further incident before tea and precious little after as Eyles employed every trick in the book to try and force a win. Even using nine bowlers including Boultbee's enticing mixture of long hops and full tosses. The wickets came but too slowly and Eltham finished on 155-7 off their 53 overs. A three hour stint in the field leaving most of the OA's feeling the worse for wear. There was time however for Hulf to further impress the first team skipper with a sharp catch at silly mid-off and some excellent overs which included the wicket of Eltham's limpet like left hander to a real beauty that came back and splattered the stumps, Andy deciding that he was a good enough prospect to jump straight from the 3rd XI to a vacant slot in next week's first team.
